How RISE Church began

The History Behind Our Founding and Name

1982

Church founded at our current location

1983

Pastor Greg Mohr pastored the church for 26 years under the name The River Church

2006

Pastor James Varnadore moved to Decatur from Florida to become the Youth Pastor. He prayed that the Lord would give him a youth group name that would unite the Wise County youth and would speak the Truth of God’s Word to their hearts.

2006

RISE:youth was the group name chosen as a way to call the youth higher.

2010

God spoke to Pastor Greg that He had a new assignment for Greg. Church leadership felt the best plan was to ask then youth pastor, Pastor James Varnadore, to move to the lead pastor position to transition the church to it’s next season

2011

Pastor James transitioned to the Lead Pastor with the same Elder team that had been serving for years with Pastor Greg.

2019

Building Renovation and name change from The River Church to RISE Church. The Lord alone orchestrated the ability to update our building and create more needed community space. As that quickly fell into place, it was made very clear that the new name of the church was RISE Church. It had been sitting there all along. The new building renovations and the name change were both revealed at the same time for our growing church.

2024

RISE Church has a wonderful relationship with Pastor Greg Mohr to this day. His response to the name change was – The River is RISING! “Further up and further in,” CS Lewis
